SENIOR INTERACTION DESIGNER/ART DIRECTOR

“You were hired because of your desire to learn and grow everyday”

OPPORTUNITY

Deseret Book will always be a place I will look back and feel like I owe everything to. It was the place where I feel I grew the most as a designer, where I saw and felt the importance of a design team/family, and where I learned skills to help me throughout my whole career. From developing new web experiences to re-designing and developing new email marketing campaigns and engagement for Deseret Book, I challenged myself to always test and better the experience that our users would have. Inside the Deseret Book brand there are many other companies in which I helped re-design their web experiences and provide more customer engagement and use.

CHALLENGES

With how I loved working for Deseret Book, it still brought its own challenges that were a struggle to work around. The company restructured a few years into my time and some great relationships I had were no longer part of the company. The VP of Marketing and the Creative Services manager were let go and not replaced, and the Marketing team was cut in half. We were relocated to a smaller part of the building but the few of us continued to produced and put out high quality and effective campaigns with smaller staff. But when people are passionate, take pride in their work, and help others succeed, amazing things can happen.

ART DIRECTION

A few years into my time at Deseret Book I was entrusted and challenged to develop Art Direction and management skills. This allowed me to grow in so many ways that were crucial in my career, but also developing good work habits, expectations, and management. I had the chance to work with junior designers, contractors, and others inside the creative team to develop campaigns, tv spots, radio spots, and interview authors and artists for various marketing needs.

PRINT DESIGN

Developing printed materials for a wide range of marketing needs was something that developed my skills. To be knowledgable of sizes, papers, process, specs, and seeing the final placement of materials was something I still enjoy to this day. Also being able to develop communication skills with outside vendors and printers was a great opportunity to build relationships that can continue to assist in my career when needs come up. Print is not dead and still very much alive inside Deseret Book.
